Festival Ideas 2013

22/05/2013

With the weather finally beginning to reflect the quickly approaching summer, it’s time to think about acts and ideas for your festival. With everything from established headliners to the hottest up and coming acts, we have something for every festival.

One of the biggest success stories of the past year has to be The Strypes, the Cavan four piece have received praise from the likes of Dave Grohl, Elton John, Jake Bugg, Colin Hanks, Noel Gallagher, Zane Lowe and of course Paul Weller. The former Jam frontman is such a fan he invited two of the band to accompany him for a special show in London. With appearances on Jools Holland and tours of Japan under their belts already, these boys are sure to be one of the biggest acts to come out of Ireland in years.

Five piece pop-rock act Keywest have gained a very loyal following in their short three years selling out tours around the country and with a forthcoming show in Dublin’s Vicar Street. Their debut album “The Message’ reached No.2 in the iTunes charts and was nominated by Hot Press for Best Debut Album. Having accumulated over one million YouTube views, the group are currently hard at work on their second album.

Bipolar Empire are a band with festivals in their blood, they even formed at one back in 2007. In the past few years they have become pros on the festival circuit playing Oxegen, Indiependence and Knockanstockan to name but a few, as well as tours in South America. They have been busy over the past few months recording tracks for their new album over in London set to be released before the end of the year.

Another female fronted act, Dirty Epics, SJ Wai has been described as one of the most exciting performers in the country. Veterans of the festival circuit, the electro pop group have graced the stages of Oxegen and even SXSW in Texas. Their first album ‘Straight In No Kissing’ was highly acclaimed within Ireland, with their latest release ‘One – Way Mirror’ receiving plenty of praise.

Paddy Casey is back on the live scene after a five year hiatus along with new material in the shape of new album ‘The Secret Life Of’, already confirmed to play Cork’s Indiependence, the summer is set to be a busy time for the singer songwriter.

Having been voted one of the Top Ten Irish Bands of All Time, The 4 Of Us, are still as popular with crowds as they were twenty years ago. Founding members and brothers Brendan and Declan Murphy have been wowing audiences around Europe with their acoustic show.

Winners of the IRMA Award for Best Newcomer in 1987, and Best Irish Group in 1989, Cry Before Dawn are back after a two decade long absence.  They are receiving rave reviews and airplay for their latest single Is This What You Waited For?

If you’re looking for something a bit outside the box for your festival entertainment then look no further than hip hop comedy duo outfit The Rubberbandits. Gaining notoriety in Ireland and further afield for their appearances on The Republic Of Telly and their admirable campaign to beat the X Factor for Christmas No.1 with the hilarious Horse Outside, Blindboy Boatclub and Mr Chrome, along with unofficial member Willie O’DJ, have sold out venues across the country and in the UK. Opening up the Main Stage at Oxegen 2011, the boys attracted a crowd of over 20,000; the largest ever recorded for an opening act at the festival.

Daft Punk Tribute, complete with custom made helmets and LED lights are every bit as good as the real thing. With latest album “Random Access Memories” currently topping the charts and no tours planned for the duo, Daft Punk Tribute are as close as it is possible to get.

For something even more different, what about a Silent Disco? A must at any festival, featuring two DJs, audiences have the option of switching between frequencies on their headphones to listen to whatever takes their fancy. Always a huge hit with festival goers.

Time To Become Part Of The Music

    06/02/2012

Take A Sneak Peak At WholeWorldBand At The Music Show
    RDS, 25 & 26 February 2012

WholeWorldBand, a revolutionary new interactive tool for iPhone 4 / 4s and iPad2 developed by Kevin Godley (Godley & Crème, 10CC) and Andy Wood (Hypergallery, Cubic Motion) that lets you create music with other musicians and music fans around the world in both sound and video, will be showcased at this year’s Music Show which takes place in RDS, Dublin on 25 & 26 February 2012.

Kevin Godley and Andy Wood will demonstrate the new music sharing, revenue generating app for the first time at the 2012 Music Show. The WholeWorldBand app, which allows musicians to collaborate and share their creations online, will then be available to download from the iTunes store across the world from March 2012.

A number of major recording artists including The Edge (U2), Ronnie Wood (Rolling Stones), Gavin Friday, Gemma Hayes, Cathy Davey, Mik Pyro (Republic of Loose) and Liam Ó Maonlaí (Hot House Flowers) are currently creating performances for WholeWorldBand and will be uploading new or collaborating on existing tracks in the near future. Attendees at The Music show will be able to check out the WholeWorld Band App over the weekend and work with Kevin Godley to collaborate on tracks from some of these artists at the show.

Musicians and music fans from all over the world will be able to contribute and combine a selection of video performances, including their own, fr

om the WholeWorldBand library to create their own favourite band line-up. And they will also have the opportunity to earn money from their performance.
Kevin Godley said “WholeWorldBand is a revolutionary new online music tool that provides a new platform for distribution

while offering the opportunity of new revenue streams for up and coming and established musicians and bands and, in fact, anyone.”

The WholeWorldBand App allows you to originate a track or add yourself to performances by well-known artists and bands by playing along with them, or substituting yourself for any member of a band.
WholeWorldBand lets musicians record and film while playing or singing along to any track on the menu using the microphone and cameras on their iPhone or iPad then upload a unique mix of yourself plus other users to Facebook and YouTube etc.
In WholeWorldBand, musicians can upload their own original tracks and earn money when other users download and share them. The more performances that are downloaded, the more musicians can earn.

“It's fantastic that The Music Show is the first place that people will get to see this great project in action,” Hot Press editor Niall Stokes said. “Kevin Godley is a real visionary – exactly the kind of ambitious genius to carry off something special like the WholeWorldBand idea. And he has found the perfect partner for his grand scheme in Andy Wood, who founded Hypergallery, a portal where you can buy all the great cover artwork. Between them, they have created an app that has amazing long term potential. People will see just how much at The Music Show. It is a really exciting development that we're proud to be part of.”

Irish Artist, Niall Toner, Signs with Pinecastle Records

    24/01/2012

Pinecastle Records is pleased to announce that it has signed Irish bluegrass artist , Niall Toner, to its roster. Niall will soon release a new single in his native Ireland, a song called “Tomorrow,” taken from his upcoming Pinecastle release. This will be a new album of original material, due in the fall of 2012, in conjunction with a U.S. tour. Niall's most recent release in the U.S. was The Sounds of the Blackstairs Mountains, featuring his tribute to the father of bluegrass, “William Smith Monroe,” which is still receiving extensive airplay on bluegrass radio.

“I am thrilled and delighted to be the first Irish artist signed to Pinecastle Records. It's a dream come true for me, and an honour to be part of a label roster that includes many of my own musical heroes, like Jesse McReynolds and the Osborne Brothers. I look forward to working with Lonnie, Ethan, Matt and the entire Pinecastle team. Onwards and upwards.” – Niall Toner.

    Niall Toner
Niall Toner Irish Blue Grass Musician

“I so enjoy your William Smith Monroe song, Niall, very well-written, and performed, and also timely in 2011, the Bill Monroe Centennial Year. Your video is also great. Very professional, and mighty good music to boot!” Greg Cahill, Special Consensus, Chicago, IL.

“It has been truly amazing to watch how the global radio community has responded to Niall [Toner] and his music. Niall has the fastest rising bluegrass album in the history of AirPlay Direct, and currently has the #2 bluegrass album of “All Time” on AirPlay Direct. This success at global radio has now translated into a record deal for Niall with Pinecastle Records… congratulations!” – Robert Weingartz, Chairman & CEO of Ai

    rPlay Direct.

“Niall makes great 'open-hearted' music, and his tributes to Monroe are just superb. His 'Ocean Of Teardrops,' composed 'in-the-style-of' the Blue Sky Boys and the Monroe Brothers, is a duet song that kills me!” Paul Williams, Songwriter and President of ASCAP.
The Niall Toner Band is an acoustic Irish bluegrass band with Celtic influences whose diverse repertoire ranges from contemporary up-tempo songs and tunes to inspirational gospel-style numbers, as well as tributes to Bill Monroe the father of bluegrass like “The Master's Resting Place” and “Bill Monroe's Mandolin.” Niall formed the Band 2001 with musical cohorts Clem O'Brien (guitar) and Dick Gladney (bass). Toner credits Clem and Dick for being so supportive in the constant strive for originality in his music.

Niall's composition credits include songs recorded by artists like Bill Wyman (The Rolling Stones), The Nashville Bluegrass Band, Albert Lee, Special Consensus, Keith Sewell, The Swanson Family and more. In 2003 Toner was nominated for a Global Artist Award by the CMA. To date, Niall and his Band have recorded and released three CD albums, and they perform their original songs and tunes on a regular basis at Festivals and Venues in Ireland, the UK, Europe and the USA.

Niall was born in Dublin, Ireland and nurtured an early interest in music by tuning in to Radio Luxemburg and the AFN radio service from Germany. The Saturday night re-broadcast of the Grand Ole Opry from Nashville was his first exposure to Country music, and when a local school-friend showed up with a collection that included the music of Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, The Carter Family and Jimmy Rodgers, Niall's musical fate was sealed. Niall Toner is widely regarded as one of Ireland's leading experts on bluegrass and American country music, and he brings this knowledge of music to a wide

audience, both through his live performances with The Niall Toner Band and various workshops, as well as through his radio show, Roots Freeway, which is broadcast on Ireland's national radio station, RTE Radio One. www.rte.ie/radio1/rootsfreeway/

Music Festivals in Europe: Find a New Take on the Festival Experience

    19/10/2011

It is great to leap on a train and go to music festival in a town not far from where you live, where you are almost guaranteed to bump into a bunch of people you know. Listening to familiar local bands and big names thrown together can be a real thrill. But sometimes it is better to head far afield, where the weather is more reliable and the music offers something a little different in among the headline acts. Bands can also benefit from expanding their horizons and looking for gigs at music festivals elsewhere in Europe, which will allow them to play music, make new contacts and have a holiday all at the same time.

More fun, without the financial sting

European music festivals can also be a much cheaper choice compared to the increasingly wallet-scorching ticket prices of festivals at home. This summer, a two-day camping ticket to the Hartera Festival in Rijeka, Croatia, cost just €85 as opposed to €224.50 for three days at this year's Oxegen Festival, or around €233 for Glastonbury in England. However, you do have to take the cost of travel into account. Unless you

manage to grab a very cheap flight you will probably end up paying the same, although you do get a lot for your money.

A lot of people like the idea of a summer music festivals but prefer to stay away from camp sites unless they involve a luxury trailer complete with fridge, shower and a leather sectional recliner to laze on whilst listening to the tunes. If so, the good news is that a lot of European music festivals offer the music without the mud and lack of permanent plumbing. There are a number of world-class festivals in Europe that offer great music without the need to camp.

One of the wackiest and most lively festivals on the planet is the month-long

_blank”>KaZantip event in Crimea, Ukraine, a lovely part of the world that declares itself to be an independent republic once a year, even electing its own 'preZident'. Instead of buying tickets, visitors must buy either single- or multiple-entry visas that will allow them into the temporary republic so they can enjoy electro music in an utterly unique atmosphere.

Alternately, for a more sedate experience head to the small, intimate festival in Antalya, Turkey, for the likes of Gilles Peterson, Theo Parrish, and Tim Sweeney. The Sunsplash Antalya festival price comes with hotel accommodation included at about €745 for a full seven days of sunshine and chilled sounds, as well as workshops on everything from mixing to graffiti art.

Gilles Peterson also hosts his own event in Sète, France, called Worldwide: a four day festival ending with a huge eighteen-hour party on the beach. Last year the festival, which also has a sister event in Singapore, included music by artists such as Jamie xx, Ghostpoet, Quantic, MC Dynamite and James Blake.

Croatia is a great place for a festival. Lying outside of the Eurozone, living costs within the country are usually a little lower than elsewhere in Europe, and during the summer months hot, sunny weather is pretty much guaranteed. As well as the Hartera Festival, mentioned above, Croatia is home to a number of other festivals including Outlook at Fort Punta Christo, Pula, in the north of the country, and INmusic in Lake Jarun, Zagreb, the country's capital city.

Across Europe music lovers have created events that cover all kinds of music, served up in beautiful locations that would be worth visiting just for themselves. From electro, dubstep and bass in a ruined Croatian fort to Gypsy-inspired folk music on the beach in Spain, everyone will find a festival to suit their musical taste.

Necessity is the mother of Invention… The recession brings with it the birth of a new era in Irish Talent

    26/01/2011

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past few years I'm sure you are aware that we are currently in the middle of a recession. And although it may seem all doom and gloom, surprisingly not every facet of Irish culture has suffered. While the economy has been in utter turmoil and the financial crisis grows worse each day, the Irish music industry has seen the exciting birth of a new wave of Irish musicians and music. Now, more than ever, we need inspiring new music to drown out the cries of our empty wallets and just as needed we have delivered.

Repression, in this case financial, elicits creativity and one need look no further than the Emerging Talent section of the AMA Music Agency's website to find an abundance of phenomenally original Irish talent which has rose to the forefront of the international music scene due to the extraordinary uniqueness of these exceptionally gifted artists.

    Bat Kinane
Bat Kinane is an emerging artist from Ballyknockan, Co.Wicklow who, as well as solo artist, is guitarist and songwriter in highly acclaimed Irish rock band Glyde who have toured Europe many times and have opened for top international acts like Slash and Metallica. During some off time from Glyder Bat continued to pursue his passion for creating music. The end result is an eclectic album of rock, folk and blues called “A lifetime to Kill” which critics have praised as being “a fantastic and welcome change of pace from an extremely talented songwriter” (Steven Reid, Sea of Tranquility/Fireworks).

    The Shoos
The Shoos caused quite a stir with the release of their single “Distance” in May 2010, which achieved widespread airplay and the band impressed with live radio sessions including Today FM’s Ray D’Arcy Show, Radio One’s Arena and Pat Kenny shows and FM104’s Strawberry Alarm to name a few. “Distance” reached number 1 in the national physical sales chart and 21 in the combined physical and download charts. The success of “Distance” attracted major label interest, including Universal Music Ireland who plan to release new material early 2011 as well as Interscope in the States which have since invited the band to LA to work with a number of producers including Warren Huart (The Fray). They spent most of October 2010 in LA and played several shows including a headline gig at the legendary Viper Room and are currently in the studio putting the finishing touches to the tracks to be included on their upcoming Universal Ireland release.

    Tupelo
    Tupelo

are one of the nation’s most unique bands, blending classic Irish influences and instrumentation with the less expected influence of American folk and bluegrass music. Their eclectic line-up includes banjo, fiddle, brass and double bass – all blended into a sound that is both unusual and familiar. The band have been honing their sound up and down Ireland for the past few years, playing at festivals such as the Electric Picnic and Cork Jazz and picking up fans of the stature of Dave Fanning and Imelda May. Having just released their debut album “Dirty Money”, itself coming on the back of a top ten single, Tupelo are back to doing what they do best – playing live to packed houses all over Ireland.

    Keywest
With significant label interest on both sides of the Atlantic, Keywest have won many fans both in the public and the music industry and 2011 looks like being an exciting year for the band. Their 2009 single “Miss You Most” has already raised their profile when it was snapped up by the producers of the IFTA nominated RTE 2 TV series; Aislings Diary for its soundtrack in an episode, while two of the band’s other original tracks also featured in the series. The band’’s sound can best be described as LA Rock-meets-pop infused by the melting pot of raw talent that characterizes each individual. So unique is the result that the merest introduction of their sound has brought them to the attention of national TV and radio. The band has recently played on the Late Late Show and The Cafe as well as a number of national and local radio stations around Ireland and will continue to prosper both here and abroad in the coming years.

    Andrew Mann
Andrew Mann is an extraordinary and exceptionally gifted Irish singer and writer who has been performing professionally around Ireland and Europe for the last six years. After writing literally hundreds of songs over the last ten years he has earned a name for himself on the Irish music scene as someone with a powerful and

soulful voice and armed with an intense magnetic set that never disappoints. 2010 is set to be a big year for Andrew Mann. Armed with a debut album “Hidden In Plain Sight” that is filled with belting, heartfelt and deeply personal acoustic and rock songs and an obvious fire in his belly, Andrew Mann is ready to hit the road and share his songs of Irish soul with the world.

This electrifying smorgasbord of emerging raw Irish talent is enough to draw all attention of the recession and onto the exciting prospects in the Irish music industry in 2011.

Elbow’s Guy Garvey hits out at rip-off promoters

    14/10/2010

Elbow frontman Guy Garvey has spoken up against promoters who rip-off off young bands by operating a pay to play scheme. Speaking at the annual In The City music conference, Garvey blamed the system for stifling new talent. “There needs to be something really strong in place if a promoter is found to be ripping off young bands,” Garvey said. “It’s really really unfair. It’s basically playing on the hopes and dreams of people who are at the very first hurdle of their musical careers.”

He also remembered the treatment that his own band received in their early days. “If I knew that you could get in touch with the Mus

icians Union and I knew there was someone local who you could report said promoter to, that would be the way to do it. It should be the norm that you don’t get ripped off. I think it should be policed more.”

Why should a band use a booking agent?

    22/09/2010

As the DIY ethos in music continues to spread throughout the world of recording, promotion and record labels, so many bands approach the booking of live gigs themselves. While this may seem like a sensible and money saving option, in truth there is much to be gained from working with an experienced agent. Here are a few reasons why you should consider your options:

Manage your diary in one place – avoid mix ups and double bookings by having one person manage your schedule. Pass on all enquiries.

Access to venues – as an agent we are in direct contact with venues and promoters across the country. Save on wasted time sending unanswered emails and unreturned calls by letting us do the work for you.

Widen your options – as well as the traditional music venues we have strong links in the corporate and event world. This means that you will be able to book in shows that don't affect your regular touring.

    Get The Best Access

    >Mix and match – use outside professionals when it suits you (ie. record in a studio, release music yourselves).

Earn more money – quite simply, an agent can probably get you more gigs for better money. They can also plan tours in a manner that will cut down on travelling expenses etc

Get the backing of professionals – we are always on hand to offer our bands help

and advice, plus our full productions and promotional back-up.

And finally… – if you do all the above, you can avoid this….
